Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu Season 2 – Episode 4 RECAP

Tensions come to a head over the general’s surgery as old wounds are opened so that they can heal

We go back to the conversation between Woojin and Sabu. He asks how honestly and comprehensively he should tell Dr. Park… like they did not follow procedure and get a CT scan first, etc. Sabu asks why Woojin would even ask and Woojin stutters that it could bring up problems… Sabu laughs and tells Woojin to answer everything honestly and truthfully. He walks away laughing.

Meanwhile, Dr. Park opens up the body to find out that it is pretty clean. The anesthesiologist comments that there is not much to do when an expert does a surgery…A lot of blood has been substituted but it looks like everything was caught. Dr. Park asks about the CT results and Woojin pauses before answering that the situation was too urgent to wait for a CT scan. Dr. Park angrily accuses Woojin and Sabu of malpractice for starting the surgery without a CT scan.

At the same time, the head of the hospital arrives to find no one at the front desk. Areum comes by and asks who he’s looking for and mistakes him for a regular patient. Areum offers to do a checkup and the doctor agrees to follow.

In the emergency room, Eunjae attends to a rib fracture while being under the influence of her anti-anxiety medicine. She’s partially falling asleep and partially highly distracted. She’s almost like she’s drunk as she talks back to Dr. Bae for being too formal and giving too much information to the rib fracture patient telling him that his condition could be really bad. The poor patient gets freaked out and Dr. Bae pulls Eunjae away.

In the general’s surgery, a gauze comes out discolored. Dr. Park’s minion is tasked with finding the leak but accidentally cuts a clip. Since the general is still in the early stages of recovery, everyone goes on high alert and more blood is called for…Woojin goes into damage control mode and he quickly finds the area that lost the clip. Woojin and Dr. Park reclip the area and stop the bleeding. However, one of the organs is highly swollen. They will need to wait for a third surgery to finish everything…

Sabu finishes his surgery on the body guard and tells the head of security the results. He expects that after a couple of days under observation, the body guard will be fine.

Comedic relief. Areum finds out that her “patient” is the head of the hospital when Dr. Jung comes out and recognizes him. Areum is humiliated and the head of the hospital goes away laughing.

Do Yoon Hwan is having tea with a reporter when they get news that the general’s surgery did not go well. The reporter asks if it was not a problem with the first surgery since Dr. Park is so reknown but Sabu is a doctor who ran away to the country side and lives under a pseudoname… Do Yoon Hwan chuckles that they can come to an understanding.

On the side, the General’s son arrives. He wonders why the general has to undergo another third surgery when Dr. Park tries to cover it up by saying they found a couple of issues in the second post-operative surgery. But they handled it. Dr. Park answers that the organs were more swollen than expected so they have to wait for the swelling to go down but the son demands to speak with the other doctor who handled the first surgery.

Corporate politics. Dr. Park’s minion accuses Woojin of jumping from line to line in the locker room. He tries to intimidate Woojin but Woojin is not having it. Woojin stops the minion by pulling his hand and warning the minion not to threaten him physically before walking off.

On the side, Eunjae is falling asleep at the information desk in the emergency room. She leans against the counter and keeps falling asleep mid-conversation with the nurses about the patient. Woojin walks in and sighs. He calls out her name to get her attention.

Eunjae stumbles over grabbing him by his collar threatening to kill Woojin for betraying her. Then she leans against him and literally falls asleep standing surprising everyone who is watching. Woojin drags her to the bathroom and orders her to wash her face.

Eunjae yells back that she doesn’t want to listen to him. He is an opportunist that took her chance at going back to the headquarters hospital… If he was going to do this, why did he call her into his surgery. If he had not, she would not have been sent down to Doldam in the first place. Woojin sighs and asks if she feels better blaming someone else. Eunjae screams that it’s all his fault and Woojin walks out of the bathroom.

In the hallway, Woojin sees Moonjung and they don’t speak. But Moonjung looks concerned and looks at Eunjae’s anti-anxiety medicine that he found.

Meanwhile, the general’s son accuses Sabu of malpractice for not taking a CT scan before starting the operation. He accuses Sabu of taking on a surgery that Sabu was not skilled to handle because Sabu wanted the prestige of working on the general. Sabu quietly responds that if Sabu was the type that cared about reputation, he would not have worked on the general. The surgery was too risky and Sabu would had refused to even operate. However, the son stands up angrily and declares that he is going to sue the whole hospital for malpractice.

The general’s head of security follows the son out and tries to calm him down. The head of security tells the son that there must be an understanding – he was watching all of the surgeries and saw nothing that could have been malpractice. The son snaps back that that he heard from a reporter that the second surgery was recorded and the recording has proof of malpractice in the first surgery.

Back in the locker room, Eunjae seems to be waking up. She sighs that Woojin is a horrible person and gets up. But, she overhears two people speaking about a surgery recording. She looks over and sees a nurse hand over a USB drive to Dr. Park’s minion.

At the same time, Woojin walks in on the chief anesthesiologist, head nurse, and the admin head talking about the malpractice suit. Mr. Jang implies that Woojin might have received money from the other side to witness against Sabu. Head Nurse yells at Mr. Jang for implying it but Woojin only smirks. He sighs that every hospital the same…Woojin leaves with the Head Nurse following. The head anesthesiologist tells Mr. Jang that Mr. Jang made a mistake.

Woojin storms out and meets Sabu in the hallway. He yells at Sabu for not asking Woojin himself. Why did Sabu tell Woojin to say everything and then accuse him of saying too much. He asks if Sabu was testing Woojin and storms off. Sabu is quiet but asks Head Nurse what is going on.

Woojin goes back to the recreational room where Eunjae is wondering what to do. Dr. Park’s minion had offered to bring Eunjae back to the main hospital if she stays quiet. Eunjae starts to ask Woojin but he puts in his headphones and she walks off.

In the emergency room, Dr. Jung is surprised when Eunjae comes to the ER for a call instead of Dr. Bae. It turns out they wanted Dr. Bae but Moonjung told them to call Eunjae for all ER related issues for the time being. He smiles as he says it.

The fractured rib patient has an issue and they all go into damage control mode but Eunjae stops them. The patient is also suffering from a flat chest. They intubate him and set him up on the ventilator. Once the ventilator is set up, the patient stabilizes. Everyone is relieved and Sabu comes around with the situation under control.

Sabu asks Eunjae how she knew it was a flat chest condition. She tells him that she saw it once in a traffic accident patient… She should to spend her night shifts at the emergency room since emergency patients live and die based on time. He tells her that it was surprising that she could recognize it after only seeing it once. She proudly answers that she is fast at learning… Sabu doesn’t smile and asks if she ever ran out on surgery in the emergency room or from seeing blood. Eunjae responds that she never has an issue in the emergency room… she has no problem with blood or cutting anywhere except in the operating room.

Sabu then dismisses her after telling her that this is her first patient. She needs to take care of him. Eunjae lights up at the delegation. She asks about Sabu telling her to quit being a doctor earlier. Sabu asks back if she would really quit just because he told her to. Eunjae smiles and trots off on cloud nine.

Eunjae walks by and overhears the old staff talking about the malpractice issue. The chief anathesiologist tells Mr. Jang that Sabu was the one who sent Woojin into the surgery. So, if Sabu trusts Woojin, they should trust Woojin as well. Eunjae frowns realizing Woojin did not betray her.

AT the same time, Head Nurse brings Woojin a soda. She tells him that he left it in the meeting room and apologizes as they should not have accused Woojin without proof. Woojin is still hurt and tells her that it’s fine, he could have taken the money after all, he was willing to operate for money.

Head Nurse answers back that if Woojin truly only cared about money, he would not have cared to tried to find the answer for the problem that Sabu gave him. She smiles at him encouragingly.

Eunjae suspiciously walks over to listen in on the general’s son talking to Dr. Park. The son requests the recording of the second surgery…

Eunjae flashes back on the conversation she overheard earlier. When the nurse handed over the copy of the surgery, she had mentioned that it looks worse for Dr. Park’s team if anyone sees the recording…

Eunjae immediately asks the front desk if they have a small black USB. The front desk lady does not have one that is small enough. But she sees that the anathesiologist has one just the right size plugged into her phone. She asks to borrow it for a couple of minutes.

As Dr. Park tells the general’s son that they have no such recording. Eunjae pops over and pretends to have picked up the storage USB. Dr. Park’s minion freaks out and pulls out his USB only to be caught red handed. He denies it but Eunjae persists that the minion told her earlier that it was a recording of the full surgery.

The general’s son watches the recording and realizes the mistake he makes. He goes to apologie to Sabu. The head of security then gives the original recording to Sabu in case he needs it. Warm fuzzy feelings as the head of security’s younger brother has woken up as well. (And, Mr. Jang apologizes to Woojin with vending machine drinks. )

Dr. Park’s minion does his minion thing. He goes to the rec room and tells Eunjae that she does not know who she pissed off. Eunjae pretends not to understand his threat and he walks out as Woojin walks in. Eunjae clears her throat and then apologizes for accusing him of being an opportunist and a betrayer.

Woojin looks at her and tells her that it’s fine. Pretty music starts as Eunjae awkwardly says that it is fine. She gets up to leave…And, comes back in a minute to take off her white coat in exchange for a real coat and picking up her purse to leave. Woojin laughs at her awkwardness.

Dr. Bae sees Eunjae walking out with a smile and drops her anti-anxiety medicine into his drawers ith a smile.

Woojin drops by Sabu’s office where Sabut gives him $10,000. Woojin asks why Sabu is giving him money when the week is not up. Sabu jokes about taking back the money and Woojin grabs it. Sabu tells Woojin that the money is Sabu’s personal money – Woojin can pay it back $1,000 a month.

Woojin stares and Sabu laughs that he knows he’s either showing off or being romantic. Woojin walks out and pauses in the empty lobby. He thinks back on Sabu, Head Nurse and Mr. Jang. He sighs that the people at Doldam is weird.

Suddenly, the gangster loan sharks come in and ask Woojin for money.

Where to start? I feel like this was an episode that did a lot of heavy lifting but when it’s done, you just feel good and you don’t remember what the main points were. What subplot did I enjoy the most? The epic battle between Dr. Park and Sabu both in the operations room vis a vis teams and off with corporate politics? The subarc of the hospital staff seeing Eunjae’s weakness with her anti-anxiety medicine directly as she falls asleep on her feet but still treating her with respect and her colleagues working hard to help her overcome it? The subarc of Woojin learning how to trust others as the old Doldam team opens up his wounds asking him about if he betrayed Sabu for money and then owning up to their mistakes and actually apologizing? The subplot of Eunjae coming to terms about her own incorrect assumptions about Woojin’s betrayal and their short but sweet shared moment?

It was just a really good episode and I am feeling warm fuzzlies.  Thank you to the Dr. Romantic team for providing an hour’s escape and the warm fuzzlies.

Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu Season 2 – Episode 3 Recap

Sabu performs open heart surgery on the general to save his life and Doldam becomes the grounds for a hostile takeover.

Episode 3

Chaos erupts outside of Doldam as the reporters descend. Everyone wants the scoop on what is happening with the General…
We return to the scene where Woojin was about to call Sabu as the general’s temperature was rising and Dr. Park was demanding control over the patient. The General’s heartrate is falling as the doctors argue with Dr Park’s minion not letting Woojin call Sabu and the General goes into cardiac arrest.

Cardiac arrest makes Dr. Park’s crew back off and Woojin begins CPR. Only when Woojin order for surgery does Dr. Park barge in. It’s been 2 minutes and they need to exchange doctors pumping. Woojin refuses to get off to protect the patient but Sabu arrives and yells at Woojin to get off and let the other jump on.

Dr. Park wants to begin with an exam but Sabu asks for a stapler and surgical tools. Dr. Park demands to know if Sabu can handle the liability. Sabu yells back that a doctor should ask if they can save the patient and not worry about the liability first… Woojin and Dr. Park’s minion switch places again.

As everyone watches in shock, Sabu begins to massage the heart directly. It’s as if the world stops because no one can do anything but watch as Sabu continues…until the heart begins to pump by itself. The room lets go of a collective sigh. Sabu compliments Woojin for doing a good job.

Afterwards, it’s cute to see that Woojin’s hands are shaking as he staples the General back together. The oldies all tell Woojin he did a good job. Woojin sighs that he didn’t do anything but run around in shock and Head Nurse smiles that he protected the patient until Sabu arrived…When they all leave, Woojin’s legs give up and he laughs.

Sabu walks out to see Dr. Park and minions sitting in the lobby in silence. Dr. Park tells Sabu that he is surprised…He has only seen open heart surgery three times in his life. Why does Sabu stay in such an unknown country hospital when so skilled – does he have a psychological issue? After all, Sabu is one of the only doctor’s in Korea that has triple boards… It’s not money or fame.

Sabu answers that it’s because he’s needed. Dr. Park walks up close to Sabu and continues… He only came down to Doldam to see Sabu. Now, he thinks that Sabu is a pathological liar or crazy. Sabu laughs and walks off.

Sabu goes back to his office to look up Dr. Park and finds out that he graduated from Johns Hopkins and that he was on the same bus accident that Sabu was in 11 years ago.

The next day brings its own set of problems. Eunjae wakes up incredibly tired as the new anathesiologist doctor not only stole her stuffed animal as a pillow but snored… Woojin is sleeping on the couch so Eunjae takes out a sharpie to draw on his face. Except he wakes up and an awkward moment ensues.. When Woojin comes out – he is a bit disheveled and Eunjae has a mustache on her face.

To fix it, Eunjae runs to the emergency room and grabs a surgical mask.

Meanwhile Dr. Park holds a press conference about the general. He implies that the condition is so bad that they have to have a follow up second surgery… not that it’s just a simple follow up.

Woojin meets with the anesthesiologist who tells him that he changed. Why should he care if the headquarters doctors take Sabu’s patient. Woojin should act the way he always did – not care as long as he’s paid. Woojin goes straight to Sabu to see if Sabu is going to fight losing such a famous patient.

Sabu? He’s calm and kicks Woojin out of his office. He says that the doctors are competent and this gives him a chance to relax. Something they direly need. Woojin asks Euntak after he leaves why they are all pretending nothing is happening just because Sabu decided not to fight. Euntak answers that they care. However, they are following Sabu’s lead because he respect him.

The head nurse, however, does not seem to care. She tells all of the support staff and the nurses that they will not cooperate with the headquarters doctors… Ensue some fun as the doctors from the headquarters hospital get blocked at every step. They refuse to give up the charts or provide any information without the primary doctor – Sabu’s permission. They are only able to get the info through Dr. Moonjung who has no idea about the power struggle happening. We later find out that Sabu told Moonjung that it is fine

Eunjae runs into Dr. Park and immediately goes to Woojin. She tells him that they should partner up. Dr. Park wanted someone who had been in the original surgery to help with the follow-up surgery. So, she wants to pair up with Woojin since she had to run out in the middle. They can agree to help Dr. Park but only on the condition that they are brought back to Seoul.

Woojin tells her that she can do it herself. He does not want to be involved and is warning her that she is being an idiot. Eunjae yells back that they aren’t close enough for him to say such things to her and Woojin walks out…to run into Areum who had been listening. Hah!

The General’s bodyguard/secretary relapses so the doctors call Sabu in. Something had erupted in the stomach. It looks like both surgeries will happen in five minute – the General by Dr. Park and the bodyguard by Sabu.

Woojin and Eunjae meet up in the locker room before the surgery. Woojin asks Eunjae if she’s seriously going to help Dr. Park… He thinks that Sabu is scary because he’s legitimate and sincere.

Eunjae responds that she hates people who do not need her. She remembers all of the harsh words by Sabu telling her to quit being a doctor if she is going to be that way… At least Dr. Park seems to need him.

Oh my heart. The General’s main body guard signs off on the surgery for the general as his children are on their way… Euntak asks about the family of the secretary who is about to be wheeled into surgery. The head body guard answers that the man only has one older brother… Him.

As we get ready for the surgery Eunjae introduces herself to the doctor. However, she’s scoffed at and dismissed. A junior doctor tells Eunjae that they cannot use the help of someone who has surgery anxiety. Eunjae asks who will help in the surgery and Woojin walks in Eunjae asks what happened and the junior doctor explains that Woojin betrayed Sabu.

Woojin does not say anything but we get a flashback. Sabu ordered him to help Dr. Park. Sabu tells him that it’s routine but it is always best to have someone who was in the first surgery help guide the follow up. Woojin refuses and Sabu laughs – so does Woojin want Eunjae to go in and run out in the middle of surgery again?

Both surgeries start.

Flashback Epilogue – Eunjae asks if they are friends and Woojin thinks back…

On the first day of medical school, both Eunjae and Woojin are late. Eunjae is freaked out about being late but Woojin barges in. He’s the one who tells the professor his name while Eunjae quietly goes in without being caught… She does so well in school that it looks like the other friends hate her. Rumors are she does nothing but study…

Woojin watches her from the side.. And, cue surprise when Woojin gets a 100% on a test in the same class that they were both late for.

Woojin is working at his part time job at a restaurant when he finds Eunjae sitting there. She ordered a bunch of food. She asks to partner up. She knows that he does amazingly well on the practical tests but sucks at the written tests. IF he can help her with the practical tests, she will share her notes and all of her homework assignments.

He agrees and opens up her book at the library. Out falls a note. Our ice princess actually is human. She has a list of the benefits of quitting medical school including sleeping, eating, having fun with friends, raising a dog, surfing, etc. She has one negative item of quitting – her mom would be sad.

Woojin’s voiceover tells us that Woojin was surprised to find out that Eunjae wasn’t just succeeding. She was surviving day by day. He rips up his official notice / resignation from school due to not having enough money.

Next, we see Woojin teaching Eunjae how to stick a patient with a needle. She clearly has anxiety about this and kind of sucks. Poor Woojin gets stuck badly. HAH.

Television is a safe way to explore universal concepts and problems. With the changing scope of society, and new generations crop up – new issues and questions or iterations of old questions are asked. Woojin’s and Eunjae’s integration with old Doldam highlights one of these interesting questions. Passion versus work. Being a doctor was not a passion for Eunjae as Woojin finds out. But, she’s good at it (with the caveat of her surgical anxiety). She “survived” medical school just as she “suvives” being a doctor, but is that wrong?

At the same time, Doldam versus Dr. Park’s posse is an interesting struggle as well. As Sabu states, Dr. Park is a competent doctor and his team is full of competent people as well. Otherwise, he probably would not allow for them to be on his team. Yet, where does the focus on competence become too much and loses sight of potential as with the case of sidelining Eunjae even though she clearly is a competent once we get rid of her extreme anxiety?

As for the show itself, it was another fun episode. The hour was over before I knew it. I cannot say any of the character’s acting made me annoyed or bored. The writing is entertaining and, even though it is an episodic series, I love how each episode is teaching us more about the characters while slowly building out each character’s strengths and weaknesses.

Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu – Season Two Episode 2 Recap

Growing pains ensue as our ducklings adjust to Doldam. Meanwhile, a general gets into a car crash.

Episode 2

The tension continues as Kim Sabu smirks that Woojin is literally selling himself for money. Woojin does not back down as he looks Kim Sabu straight with his tearfilled eyes and answering in the affirmative.

Suddenly we switch to a 911 call. A child asks for help. He is coughing and all he can eek out is that he needs help…

We turn to Kim Sabu and Woojin back in Kim Sabu’s office. The tension has decreased and Sabu gives Woojin a bag of ice. He also asks Woojin why Woojin asked for a combination surgery and did not stich up the diaphram tear himself. Woojin answers that he chose not to stich up the tear since he was only a pay doctor – he had no reason to take on additional liability.
Sabu laughs and asks why Woojin blew the whistle then. Woojin sighs that he was just naïve. Do to his naïve judgment, he lost his reputation.
Sabu stands up and tells Woojin to sleep the night at a nearby hostel and go back to Seoul. Woojin gets up in shock and yells how Sabu could tell him to go back… Sabu had said they needed help. Sabu responds that they need doctors.

Meanwhile Eunjae is about to leave because she was kept waiting when Doctor Moonjung walks by. Jang Gitae doesn’t miss the look and squats nearby informing Eunjae that Moonjung has been with their hospital for one month and is recently divorced. He offers to look into the matter further for her. LOL Eunjae declines additional information but interesting music plays and she sits back down. HAH! Do we smell a crush?

Moonjung seems to be adorkable. He is in his office and greets his skeleton as “Elizabeth” asking if she missed him.

Woojin pauses while leaning against the wall. He sighs and then barges into SAbu’s office. He asks for 1 week. He will show Sabu that he is worth it within 1 week with his surgerical skills… He just needs $10,000. A flashback shows that Sabu heard everything about Woojin in Seoul but still offered him the spot. Sabu sits down and looks at Woojin with interest.

The next day, the General of the Korean army is being transported somewhere when the driver suddenly collapses. The car veers off course and flips upside down.

Meanwhile, Areum happily walks down the new corridors stretching when she runs into EunTak. She greets him heartily and he responds without looking up at first. But when he does… cue romantic music >_<

Areum meets the rest of the team through Doctor Insoo’s explanation. In it, he barely survived taking care of the emergency room alone…for two months. When EunTak introduces himself, Areum happily notes that he’s good looking making everyone pause… They continue on until Areum sighs that there are no patients in the emergency room. The Head Nurse comes back to seriously tell her that they have a rule – you cannot say that there are no patients in the emergency room. It’s a jinx. Whenever someone says that, they get overwhelmed. Within a minute, the phone rings.

Back to our other doctors. Woojin and Eunjae share a moment when Woojin walks over closely just to note that she has something in her eye. OMG the CHEMISTRY. SOMEONE GIVE ME A TUB OF POPCORN AS I PAUSE AND SQUEAL. Moonjung walks in and introduces himself – they all attended the same school…But, introductions are cut short. The general and a security guard are brought in with half of the army. The general sustained major trauma because he was not wearing a seatbelt.

A flurry of activity ensues. The General can barely speak because of pain and the internal injuries… Woojin and Eunjae make a good team in identifying a myriad of problems…all of which are serious but that this recapper will not name ^^;;; Just note that there’s a lot of internal bleeding and problems and time is off an essence. Woojin pulls through his own soreness to get the general breathing tube set up. They are on track to get CT scans when Sabu comes in and orders that the general is taken to the surgery room immediately. He received a call from the General’s primary doctor and made the decision that time is the most important thing for this surgery.

Woojin is told that he would be the first doctor assisting. Meanwhile, Eunjae finally gets to introduce herself. Sabu warns her that he will kick her out if she falls asleep in the middle of his surgery room. She promises that it will never happen again but the other stare at her. HAH! I love the honor student characters with a major flaw. <3

What would be Korean Drama without political drama? In the background of trying to save the two patients, we have a fight with junior generals and Sabu where the junior generals wanting to transfer the general to a more prestigious hospital. Sabu insists that the loss of time would kill the probability of success of surgery and wins with a call to the General’s primary doctor. Even Do Yoonwan is told about the situation. But he’s not a complete monster. He states that he will stay out of this problem because Sabu won’t let the general die. They can take care of the credit afterwards between the main headquarters hospital and Doldam.

Back to the surgery – Woojin spends a full minute frozen in awe as Sabu finds and sews up hears. Sabu has to literally tell Woojin to focus. Among some motivational music, Woojin and Sabu get through one organ within five minutes.

Woojin then shows his own skill with the next problem. Awww, the music also changed to one that is supportive as the oldies watch in pride with the newbie showing skill. And…my heart swells! Meanwhile, Sabu is taking liberties as he continues on with new problems being found along with heavy bleeding. Literally, it’s like whack-a-mole with them trying to find out all the sources of tears and sew it up before the general can internal bleed out.

At one point, everyone pauses because the bleeding has not slowed down even though they have sewn up all of the known problems. Woojin worries that the surgery failed … Sabu determines that it’s an intercoastal vessel and they have to open up the area around the heart as the general took aspirin which is causing the bleeding to be worse.

More problems. As the bring up the blankets, suddenly Eunjae remembers the first time they worked on a dead body. Nausea hits her like a wave and she can barely keep herslef from puking. Sabu switches out Eunjae with Woojin and Eunjae runs out. Sabu ignores it all and finds the vein that is the problem while Eunjae finds refuge in a bathroom…

When the surgery ends, the politics starts up again. Do Yoonwhan sends Dr. Park to Doldam to finish up the second follow up surgery – which is basically just tying up loose ends but would get all the credit.

On the side, Woojin waits for Sabu and asks how Sabu could have gone after the intercoastal vessel without following the proper procedures and tests. He thinks that it was too risky to rely on Sabu’s instincts alone. But Sabu answers that his directive is to save people.

Sabu laughs that Woojin is far from the true answer if Woojin only saw Sabu working with instinct and luck. He tells him to work harder and walks off.

However, it is sweet to see Sabu speak with the General’s primary doctor. Somehow, this primary doctor was the one who spoke with Sabu about Woojin. Sabu sighs that Woojin has skill but that’s about it…and, he’s not sure if Woojin is a true doctor. The other doctor answers that it is their job as senior doctors to turn these juniors into real doctors.

Meanwhile, Eunjae lurks outside of Sabu’s office and peeks in before literally crawling under the door’s window. She gets stopped by the head nurse and goes into apologize to Sabu for running out of the surgery as she had indigestion due to what she ate for lunch.

Sabu asks what Eunjae did wrong to get suck in Doldam. Eunjae lies that she chose to come down. Sabu sighs and tells her that she must not know what she’s doing if she lives like that. Then he tells her never to enter into his operating rooms again. A doctor who leaves a patient on the table and runs away is not a doctor and she should immediately quit. Eunjae tears up but she does not say anything… She goes back the rec room as tears flow and packs up… And, this is the truth about working on in a high stress environment that I love to see being reflected. Character development as the characters who are undeniably good and skilled work through because, after all, life is a journey of working through our flaws, is it not?

At the same time, head nurse asks Sabu why he’s so harsh… Sabu sighs that the two newbies are terrible. One operates on people for money and the other runs out of operations due to nausea and anxiety. Head nurse worries that they would lose both of the doctors since the younger generation is not used to such harsh conditions… She reminds him that he scouted both of the doctors after a lot of effort.

In the rec room, Areum lets Eunjae cry it out before bringing over water. Eunjae sighs that she tried so hard in medical school and even as a resident. She even graduated in the top and scored in the top with the boards. Eunjae cries that she regrets it all.

Areum tells her that Eunjae should not be so harsh on herself…She’s a model for the juniors. Doctor Oh in cardiac surgery was known for hating females but Eunjae somehow survived under such a head doctor…and, she got scouted by Sabu… Eunjae asks who scouted her.

Cue flashback, Doctor Oh, sighs next to a vending machine that Eunjae is such a troublesome doctor. She’s smarter than most of the guys and also scored in the highest percentile but seems to lose it every time she goes into an operating room. Sabu nonchalantly asks if he can take Eunjae…and follows Doctor Oh persistently…all caught by Areum.

That night, Moonjung tells Woojin to get himself x-rayed and gives him some medications. Sabu noticed that Woojin was in a lot of pain during the operation and they should check and see if there was a bone fracture. The angry genius head doctor has a heart for the new ducklings…

The ducklings pause next to a coffee vending machine. Eunjae asks Woojin what he thinks of Sabu. Woojin answers that he does not care as long as he’s paid…

Now… we get back to office politics. Dr Park arrived from the main hospital with his whole entourage of junior doctors, senior anathesiologist, and nurses. They came to take care of the general. Sabu asks why the general is being transferred from one doctor to the other. He even laughs when Do Yoonwhan pulls rank. Do Yoonwhan gives Sabu an ultimatum. If Sabu does not transer the patient, he’s fired.

On the side, there is a complication with the general He goes out to call Sabu and runs into Dr. Park. But Woojin stands firmly in front of the patient’s room. He refuses to give up the patient until the responsible doctor gives such a release.

Wow, sorry for the long time between recaps. Life seems to keep getting in the way?

However, I LOVE Sabu 2 and I promise that I will get through this drama because I feel like it’s the type of feel good-encouraging drama that we can all appreciate. Additionally, I love how it’s not just about politics or just about romance. It also sheds light into socio-economic issues, as well as, the grass isn’t always greener.

As much as I was worried about Eunjae’s character, I really liked how they portrayed her struggle in this episode. It brings up a good question. Just because you are smart enough to ace the exams and you are skilled enough to ace the boards, what if you are temperamentally not as suited to a job? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think we should all be going for a passion if that passion doesn’t pay. After all, if work was fun, why would they have to pay you? But, this is an interesting question that this drama poses and I know there are many answers to it. I would love to watch how Eunjae comes to her own answer because it is clear that being a good doctor is a source of pride for Eunjae… maybe, not just to save her patients but just to continue excelling.

As for Woojin, I lvoe how it shows that he was beaten down but he still has a core view of what it takes to be a doctor. He’s a mirror to Eunjae because he’s great at being a doctor but his circumstances have made him a pyriah. YET, he is not afraid to push back when he thinks that a doctor is not doing what is in the best interest of a patient. Even when Sabu is his only hope for staying a doctor in good standing, he is willing to confront Sabu for not following best practices. While Eunjae pretends that she cares about what Sabu is like as a person or a doctor and Woojin spouts that he does not care as long as he is paid. Their actions show that it is the opposite, Eunjae does not care as long as she can stay a prestigious doctor. Woojin, however, would be willing to risk his tenuous position if he doesn’t believe in the doctor he works for. His storyline is one that I feel is going to be the cliché – he learns how good Sabu is and reconciles his values driven doctor perspective with his practical side of having to sell his skills for survival to become more of a Sabu junior.

Now, onto the next episode. Let us watch and let us enjoy. 

Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu – Season Two Episode 1 Recap

Hi everyone! After a very long hiatus, DRAMAFEED is back! I am only following one korean drama at this point and it’s the nice feel good drama of Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu. I loved Season 1 and the first four episodes of Season 2 looks like it will deliver as well.

In the middle of a busy Seoul street, Seo Woojin (Ahn Hyoseop – Abyss, Father is Strange, etc)) faithfully directs traffic until his late replacement arrives. Cue running to get dressed for his second part time job at the hospital as a pay doctor. But opportunity for us viewers to see a nice shot of Woojin’s abs. Mhmmm who knew doctors stayed so fit both mentally and physically? 😉

Meanwhile, perfect Cha Eunjae (Lee Sung Kyung – Weightlifting Fairy Kim BokJoo) waits patiently in an auditorium filled with important doctors for Professor Park’s whipple operation (the removal of the head of a pancreas, the gallbladder and the bile duct). Unknown to her, Kim Sabu is in town and dropped by. He sits a couple of rows behind her, albeit looking a bit dodgey in a hat and trenchcoat.

At the same time, Woojin barely misses his train and gets assaulted by what appears to be a day drunk salaryman. As others back away, Woojin notes the man’s amonia scent, behavior and self- victimization. The man knocks Woojin off before security guards arrive and Woojin tells them to call 911 and not the police.

Back to the surgery, there is sudden massive bleeding and the blood pressure drops. Professor Park acts swiftly but it doesn’t seem to fix it. In the audience, Kim Sabu drums his fingers for a couple of minutes and then interrupts Eunjae for a pen and paper He scribbles something down and tells her to run quickly to the surgery room. She takes one look before jumping up and running…She gives the note (stating tension pneumothorax – a condition where air is trapped in a space likely due to a punctured lung) to Professor Park who switches tactics to listening for trapped air…They find an area of extra air and pull it out – stabilizing the patient. Kim Sabu sees the stabilization and leaves.

Doctor Park walks out of the surgery exhausted and finds Eunjae waiting. He immediately asks her how she knew it was tension peunmothorax. She’s surprised that it was correct and tells him that it was a doctor from Doldam Hospital called Kim Sabu.

Kim Sabu then goes to the emergency room to wait and chances upon our other new Doldam family to be: Yoon Areum (So Joyeon) and Woojin. Areum tells an exhausted Woojin that assault cases should go to the police and doubts Woojin when he tells her that the man is suffering from an alcohol induced issue affecting liver functions. Woojin pulls out his hospital ID and Areum changes her tone to respect as Woojin is a full general surgeon while Areum is a fourth year resident. ^_^ Kim Sabu perks up at Woojin’s diagnosis… Areum is told to set up the man in preparation for surgery…

Then all chaos breaks loose! An older gentleman is brought in with pain and another middle-aged man who cannot stand because of pain…Areum cries for the nurses to call the doctor on duty as she circles around in stress of three emergency patients.

Meanwhile Eunjae goes to the vending machine while telling her mother the story of the legendary doctor who was able to tell a tension pneumothorax within minutes…Then Woojin gets tired of waiting and chooses his drink…cue flashback…They know each other…lovey dovey music and Woojin almost kissing Eunjae… She has no idea what happened to him and why hes’s at her hospital. Thanks to Eunjae getting info from her senior we find out that Woojin blew the whistle on a high up doctor for delegating his surgery and taking bribes. Then he became a full outcast….

More history. Since med school and internship/residency. They had been ultimate rivals…and ended with Eunjae slapping Woojin. For what?

Back to the present. Woojin is a pay doctor on consultancy and given 5 hemorrhoid surgeries…Another senior doctor rubs Woojin’s nose in the fact that Woojin also has a part time job at a bar. He also blames Woojin for the fact that the corrupt doctor had to close his hospital and got divorced. Woojin takes the high road and offers to give the senior doctor a discount at his bar before walking off.

At the same time, Kim Sabu gets tired of watching Eunjae circling around. He tells Eunjae to call for the department head doctor if the responsible doctor is not available. He gives orders and brings some normalcy with tests being run and medicines being prescribed… One patient gets taken care off and Sabu attends to the second of the third while the head doctor arrives… In 30 minutes… to yell at Sabu for practicing unauthorized in another hospital… The doctor on call comes back and it turns out his lunch went bad and he was in the bathroom. XD Sabu sighs at the disorganized emergency room and compliments Eunjae for doing well before leaving.

Eunjae runs after Kim Sabu in the hallway and happily asks how Kim Sabu knew that what was the problem in Doctor Park’s surgery. Kim Sabu frowns and asks if Eunjae didn’t hear that the patient was an aortic dissection…How could she just wander around when she has her own patients to look after. He walks off.

The small small world of kdrama! Doctor Park also knows Kim Sabu. They had been on the same bus which overturned in the rain… Wires falling all over the place with electric sparks as people evaucate the bus… Only three people remain. Kim Sabu doing CPR while something on the bus ceiling looks like it will fall and Doctor Park staring at Kim Sabu doing CPR in disbelief. Doctor Park also evacuates in fear but Kim Sabu stays and is eventually hit on the shoulder by a metal panel.

On the side Jang Gitae (admin head of Doldam Hospital) has fun with Michael Jackson music as he prepares for a medical professionals event. But from the stalls, Do Yoonwan walks out… It turns out that he has become the head of the hospital system fundation that includes Doldam Hospital. (For those new to the Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu world, he was big bad in the last series – head of the main hosptial to Doldam Hospital).

Kim Sabu meets with Song Hyeongchul (the main hospital head). Sabu demands that the main hospital sends down at least one general surgery doctor. Song Hyeongchul snaps back that even the main hospital does not have anyone and none of the young doctors would last under Kim Sabu anyways… He tells Kim Sabu to come back to the main hospital as one of the senior doctors.

Kim Sabu walks out just as Doctor Park storms over to fire Woojin for bringing down the reputation of the hospital…the cause being that Woojin has a part time job at a bar. Woojin asks how they are firing him when they are understaffed and he would have only been giving the worst surgeries that no one wants… So why not use him. But, Doctor Park tells Woojin that he does not care what the head of the hosptital center thought. He does not want someone ruining their hospital’s reputation. Of course the snake senior tells Woojin to finish the emergency surgery before he goes. Kim Sabu hears this all from the corner of a hallway.

Woojin goes to finish the surgery and Kim Sabu watches from the observation deck. They realize after the surgery finishes that there is a tear in the diaphram. Woojin calls for a doctor from cardiac surgery since this is not his area…the doctor on call is Eunjae.

Interestingly, Eunjae took some pills before the surgery and the main doctor warns her that she will be in trouble if she falls asleep in his surgery. When Woojin calls, the doctor sends Eunjae. Eunjae walks out hitting her chest and gagging. She manages to get to a toilet before throwing up… takes more pills and walks into the surgery with Woojin. Eunjae skillfully sews up the tear and then starts to blink as her vision gets blurry.
The other staff look at Eunjae in concern when she naps that the body is moving because they are not carefully holding him. Suddenly blood splurts and Woojin takes over to stop the bleeding. It turns out that it was not a new tear but a clot.

Eunjae apologizes that she needs to take a breather and falls. Suddenly, she is literally snoring on the surgery room floor.

Flashback. Eunjae is back in medical school about to work on a corpse. She has her eyes closed as if praying and looks like she might puke when the sheet is taken away. She starts hitting her chest and gagging while the others begin the procedure. Woojin is calm and collected by many other students run out and Eunjae almost pukes on him before fainting… Woojin ends up carrying her and running… To where? Who knows? All we know is there is a lovely ballad playing and the wind blows in the sun while Woojin manages to carry her all the way down the stairs. But Eunjae is not satisfied that she got the full kdrama female main treatment – do you know how hard it is to find a guy who can carry a grown woman four flights down and hold on without huffing and puffing? We are in storybook land! But, nope! She sobs due to her hurt pride. C’est law vie of those who have and do not realize what they have.

Back in the present, Woojin is standing at the hospital entrance staring at the rain. Kim Sabu asks if Woojin needs a job. They need a general surgeon at Doldam Hospital. Woojin asks why Kim Sabu is giving him a job when he knows the background. Kim Sabu throws Woojin’s words at Doctor Park back at Woojin. They are overwhelmed with patients and understaffed. At this point, they can pretend to be nice while giving Woojin all the surgeries no one wants.

On the side, little Areum watches this all with a smile and the wheels turn in her head.

Eunjae wakes up to her department head in the resting area. He throws down her bottle of pills and demands to know when she started taking them. She lies that it was the first time…but the head doctor sighs that this is the reason he did not want to use a female doctor.

Eunjae glares that this is her personal failure and not because she is a woman. The head doctor gives her a choice. She can either get an official punishment or she can go to the countryside at Doldam Hospital. Eunjae remembers her last interaction with Kim Sabu and begs for something else.

Eunjae arrives at Doldam Hospital to see construction going on… Head Nurse Shim yelling at Gitae. And two traffic accident patients calling Kim Sabu, Doctor Park Moonjung (oh hai Shin Dongwook!) and Doctor Jung Insoo come along. The three jump into action with Eunjae and Areum staring. Areum explains that she came because she heard Doldam Hospital was looking for doctors.

At the same time, Woojin is working at one if his other jobs – admin at a public computer lab. The loan sharks find him and beat him up…and he runs out into the middle of the street… Only to find himself in a cab to Doldam Hospital where Eunjae and Areum wait as they fall asleep in the waiting area.

Kim Sabu finishes his surgery just as Woojin stumbles in. Woojin tells Kim Sabu that he needs money. Kim Sabu tells Woojin that Woojin sounds like Woojin would work on people for money. Woojin answers that he will and Kim Sabu laughs.

My initial reaction was disappointment that the old Doldam Hospital crew would not be returning as they had such a great team chemistry in season 1. It also did not help that both Ahn Hyoseop and Lee Sung Kyung are objectively eye candies… Can they pull off flawed baby doctors that get chewed up by the demands of the medical profession that become whole in their experience helping people at Doldam Hospital? Or will they cling to protecting their eye candy image?

Fortunately, Ahn Hyoseop proved me wrong within the first ten minutes. He did a great job looking like a good looking average guy who fell on hard times… angry but knowing that he needs to keep his head down in order to survive.

I am a little worried about Lee Sung Kyung. She plays the excited honor medical student who only cares about succeeding well. She is also believable in her surgery anxiety. However, I have a hard time beleiving that a cardiac surgeon doctor at a main hospital can take care of her looks like she does… She does not seem as exhausted as I would expect from a young doctor trying to make it in the world of medicine – underslept and overworked.

In contrast, I found So Juyeon’s Areum adorable. She’s still bushy-tailed and bright eyed as a final resident. She has the confidence of someone who is in her last year of residency but the safety of knowing that she would still work under more senior doctors directing her for a while. Her crush on the legendary doctor Kim Sabu and decision to work for the best makes sense.

All in all, I miss the old crew and what they had. But, I see potential in falling for the new Doldam family. The writer Kang EunKyung also wrote Gu Family Book and Baker King Kim Tak Goo, which were both amazing as well as Hotelier way back when. Here, I already feel intrigued at the hint of romance and rivalry between Eunjae and Woojin. I want to know what put Woojin in so much debt… He’s clearly talented and this show highlights a relevant problem in society. It is not talent alone that is necessary to succeed. Woojin had talent and a conscious but he has no family support or money. As a result, he was quickly made an outcast. At the same time, Eunjae has succeeded all her life but how the heck did she become a doctor when she has such severe anxiety in surgery? Is this even the right profession for her? Let’s see what happens next. 
